Olde Beau Hiking Trails

Olde Beau has over 5 miles of hiking trails that offer everything from wooded forests and open fields, to peaceful lakes. Beautiful mountain views exist of the many ridges and the Mitchell River Gorge and beyond, into the mountains of Virginia. There are also many paths along the golf course, offering views of various holes. These trails will offer the chance to enjoy many varieties of Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, wildflowers, ferns and trees. Along the way, you may see deer, turkey, rabbits and many varieties of birds. There are trails that offer opportunities for everyone, whether you are looking for easy, moderate or strenuous hikes. Each trail is rated on difficulty due to the length. There is truly something to offer every person seeking a time with nature.

Through the Woods Trails

Length: 1 Mile - Markings: Brown - From/To: Golf Practice Range to Recreation Center - Parking: Clubhouse and/or the Recreation Center - Rating: Easy
Directions & Description: This trail offers walks through the woods and along an old logging road. It is a one-way trail, beginning behind the golf practice range and ending at the Recreation Center or connecting with other trails. Begin behind the practice range, going straight (south) into the woods at the end of the range. After about 100 yards, turn right (east) and continue along the south side of the driving range until you enter a pine forest at the end of the range. Continue through the pine forest until you reach an old logging road. The road winds west and then north until you reach the Recreation Center. Once you have reached the Recreation Center, you can stop there, walk the roads back to the Clubhouse, do a return trip on the trail or continue on the Ponds Trail to the area around the main entrance to Olde Beau and beyond.

Note: (Approximately 300 yards after beginning the logging road, there is a trail that leads off to the left. This is a side trail that will take you over to Old Roaring Gap, providing views of old fish hatcheries on the right.)


Pond Trail

Length: .5 Miles - Markings: Purple - From/To: Recreation Center to Main Gate - Parking: Recreation Center or the Pullout at the Main Gate - Rating: Easy
Directions & Description: Beginning behind the Recreation Center, turn right (north) for approximately 100 yards. Then turn left and follow the power lines for approximately 200 yards before the trail takes a slight right into the pine forest. Follow the trail until it takes you to the first of two lakes. Continue the trail beside the pond until you reach a clearing at the Olde Beau main entrance.


Antioch Church Trail

Length: .75 Miles - Markings: Orange - From/To: Mail Gate to Back Entrance of Olde Beau - Parking: Main Gate and/or the Pullout on County Downs Road Near the Back Gate of Olde Beau - Rating: Moderate
Directions & Description: This trail is a continuation of the Ponds Trail, beginning at the Main Gate and following a path along the second pond toward the pumping station at the end of the lake. At that point, it joins an old logging road and continues north, parallel to holes #4 and #5 on the golf course. Approximately 300 yards after joining the old logging road, notice the graveyard of Antioch Church on your left. Continue on the trail for approximately .5 miles until you reach the pullout on County Downs Road.


Royal Boundary Trail

Length: .6 Miles - Markings: Green - From/To: Pullout on County Downs Road Near the Back Gate to Maintenance Area - Parking: Pullout on County Downs Road Near the Back Gate and/or Maintenance Area on Turnberry Drive - Rating: Moderate
Directions & Description: Beginning at the pullout on County Downs Road near the back gate of Olde Beau, the trail follows County Downs Road east (toward the clubhouse) for approximately 150 yards. It then moves north into the woods to the Olde Beau property line, identified by a fence. Turn east and follow the boundary line (fence) for approximately 1/2 mile. The trail ends when the trail meets Turnberry Drive.


Troon Avenue Connector Trail

Length: .5 Miles - Markings: Black - From/To: Maintenance Area to Parking Area Behind 17th Tee Box - Parking: Maintenance Area on Turnberry Drive and/or Parking Area Behind 17th Tee Box - Rating: Moderate
Directions & Description: This "trail" is a connector between the Royal Trail and Sam's Creek Trail. Beginning at the end of the Royal Trail on Turnberry Drive, this trail follow Turnberry Drive for approximately 200 yards before joining Troon Avenue to the right. At that turn, follow Troon Avenue for approximately 1/2 mile. Approximately 100 yards after passing the golf cart crossing to the 17th tee box, turn right into the pull out.


Sam's Creek Trail

Length: .5 Miles - Markings: Green - From/To: Parking Area Behind 17th Tee Box to End of Mitchell River Ridge - Parking: Parking Area Behind 17th Tee Box and/or Road at End of Mitchell River Cottages - Rating: Strenuous
Directions & Description: Beginning from the parking area, take old logging road straight ahead for approximately 200 yards. Turn right (south) into the trail that leads into the woods. Go approximately 1/4 mile down the hill until the trail meets Sam's Branch. Cross Sam's Branch and turn left for approximately 50 yards. At this point, another creek joins Sam's Creek from the right. Follow this creek up the hill for approximately 1/4 miles. The trail then turns to the left, and goes up the hill to meet the road at the end of the Mitchell River Cottages.


Mitchell River Ridge Connector Trail

Length: .3 Miles - Markings: Yellow - From/To: End of Mitchell River Cottages to Clubhouse - Parking: End of Mitchell River Cottages and/or Clubhouse - Rating: Moderate
Directions & Descriptions: This "trail" connects Sam's Creek Trail and the Clubhouse. It begins on the road at the end of the Mitchell River Cottages and follows the road along the Mitchell River Cottages, through the Villas, to the Clubhouse.Vista Trail


Vista Trail

Length: 1 Mile - Markings: Blue - From/To: Parking Area Behind 17th Tee Box & Return - Parking: Parking Area Behind the 17th Tee Box - Rating: Moderate
Directions & Description: This is a spur trail that is completely on an old logging road out to the edge of the Mitchell River Ridge and return. From the parking area, take the old logging road down the hill. Follow the old logging road for approximately 1/2 mile, following the ridgeline until the end of the road. At the end, there is an unsurpassed view of the Mitchell River Gorge. The trail turn around and returns on the same route to the parking area.
